Dancing around the Sun

The solar celebrations such as Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox, and Winter Solstice are family/community events.  Usually candles, fires and circle dances are part of  these seasonal celebrations, along with good company, food and beverages. People gather to give thanks for the light and warmth of creation and creativity, on our path around the sun. The larger community celebrations are Lucia Fest, Matta Fest, and Hillfest/Fallfeast.

Lucia as the bringer of light in the dark of the year

Lucia Fest is a Scandinavian Yule tradition  usually celebrated on the 13th of December . This was the original date for Winter solstice. Lucia Feast was created by swedes who were inspired by the story of an Italian saint, 'Santa Lucia' who was co-opted from an earlier known  pagan  Sun Goddess named Lucina. Lucina presided over childbirth, which fits well with the symbolic birth of light in the dark of the year. In the swedish home on the 13th, the eldest daughter clads a white gown and a crown of candles to bring buns and cookies to her parents (in bed) at the first light  of morning. The larger community event involves a larger candlelit procession and the singing of yule carols, namely "Santa Lucia"

Natten går tunga fjät
rund gård och stuva;
kring jord, som sol förlät*,
skuggorna ruva.
Då i vårt mörka hus,
stiger med tända ljus,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.

Natten går stor och stum
nu hörs dess vingar
i alla tysta rum
sus som av vingar.
Se, på vår tröskel står
vitklädd med ljus i hår
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.

Mörkret ska flykta snart
ur jordens dalar
så hon ett underbart
ord till oss talar.
Dagen ska åter ny
stiga ur rosig sky
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.

Lucia Song translation -

The night teads heavily around the cabin and yard. Over the Earth, which the sun seems to have forgotten, shadows lay hiding.

There in our dark house quietly moving by candle light is,

Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia .

The night is vast and mute. Now a swishing is heard all through the quiet room. It sounds like wings. See on our threshhold with candles in her hair,

Santa Lucia,  Santa lucia.

"The darkness shall leave Quicly over the Earth's valleys",  so she spoke her wonderful words to us. "The day shall become new rising from a rose coloured sky."

Sana Lucia, Santa Lucia

Winter Solstice Bonfire - circle of songs and affirmations.

"Light is returning though this is the darkest hour.

No one can hold back the dawn.

Let's keep the fires burning , let's keep the light alive.

Make safe our journey through the storm.

Earth Mother is turning on her path around the sun.

The circle of life shall be renewed."

"Children of creation's womb,

light the way to gladness'

Sing a song to end the gloom

of a long night sadness.

See the hills surrounding,

now with joy abounding

dance with light, on this night

as hope fills up our hearts.

Put the Yule log on the fire

Keep the torch a burning

voice your dreams and true desires

As the wheel is turning.

Though the nights around us

Still loves light surrounds us

And it's bright' all the night

as love shines through to us

Light one candle for the strength that we need to never become our own foe.

Light one candle for those who are suffering the pain of an aching soul.

And light one candle for all we beleive in that anger won't tear us apart.

Light one candle to bring us together with peace as the song in our heart.

Open mine eyes that I might see

the gift of all inside of me.

Open mine eyes illumine me,

Great Mystery.

Follow your heart, love will find you

love will surely unbind you

Let the light in, it will heal you

sing out a song of the soul.
